Anna shouts out to the guy who is hacking away with a hedge trimmer in the garden of the supposedly empty house next door. Yes, the yard was overgrown, but he would kill some of the valuable plants with his careless destruction! He stops long enough to call her bossy and ask her to dinner! Because he assumes she will comply, she refuses! This is just like her ex’s attitude and she won’t stand for it. Returning indoors, Gran told her he just moved in with his family! Arrrggghh, married too??? Lucky for him, he had gone back inside before she could berate him again.Later Anna lets Rory know what she thinks of him – before finding out he is unmarried, the boy is his nephew, and the Mom is his sister! Even though embarrassed by her mistake, she again refuses to have dinner with him. So since Anna owns a gardening service, Rory asks if he can hire her to clean up his yard; he’s finally able to negotiate that into a dinner date. Can he finally break down her defenses? Can she learn to trust him? And will he later be able to walk away as he has with others?
This story was good, with a comedy of misunderstandings keeping Anna revved up and feisty. Sometimes she’s a little over the top, but Rory takes it in stride and his teasing her keeps the reader laughing. This is an easy, fun read and I recommend it.

I have read many of Mia Madison's books and to date, this is the only one I didn't simply love. I just couldn't get a feel for Rory and Anna as a couple. Rory is a 39 year old hot fireman--a player who can get any woman and never dates a woman for more than a single night. Anna is a 23 year old gardener who is jaded to love after being cheated on by her last boyfriend. While Rory is definitely bossy and dominate in his demeanor, I came to enjoy his character as the story progressed. Anna comes across as defiant, complaining and full of hostility in her early interactions with Rory. Why he would be persistent in wanting to date a woman who shows zero signs of wanting to date or get to know him makes no sense. There was no sexual chemistry, no witty banter, just hostility. Yet a man who supposedly can get any woman decides "she is the one for him" and refuses to back down until she agrees to go on a date with him? Sadly, I struggled with the character development in this book, specifically with Anna. While her personality did mellow out about halfway into the story, she just wasn't likeable enough for me to truly enjoy the book. I volunteered to read an Advanced Read Copy of this book.
On Fire is about Anna and Rory. Anna is a 23 year old gardener, taking care of her grandmother's garden. Rory is a 39 year old fireman who just moved in next door to Anna's grandmother. He's trying to clean up the jungle of a backyard and Anna can't stand to see him ruin a perfectly good plant, so she calls him out on it. Their argument turns into an offer of dinner. Rory ends up hiring her to work on his garden and taking her to dinner. Anna agrees, needing the job (along with the pay), wanting to see what the attraction she feels for him will lead to, but ultimately knowing that Rory is probably a player not looking for a relationship. Rory isn't looking for a relationship, but he can't get Anna out of his head and finds he wants to know her...even what that may lead to.
I thought the premise of the story was intriguing but I just couldn't "feel" the characters. I guess I just wanted to know where their feelings were coming from so I could care more about what would happen with them. The love scenes were pretty hot, but rather short for what I've come to expect from Mia Madison.
Anna is working in her Gran's backyard garden when she see someone in the next yard hacking away at the overgrown bushes. Being a gardener herself, she can't help herself from yelling at this man, Rory, that he is damaging highly prized plants. They introduce each other & Rory states that he will taking Anna out on a date. Anna is not interested in being pushed around. Declines the offer & returns to her Gran's house. She finds out from her Gran that Rory isn't everything that he presented himself to be especially single. Anna makes a point to let Rory know what she thinks about him asking her out when he has a wife & child living with him. But it is Anna who is apologizing when she finds the truth about the little boy living with Rory. And Rory drives a hard bargain to get Anna to go out with him on a date by hiring her to do his gardening work. Things click with Anna & Rory when they go out & she finds his bossy ways tolerable in the heat of the moment. When someone from Rory's pasts decides to pay him a visit, Anna is surprised by what she finds out & decides to walk away. Will Anna give Rory a chance to explain? Will Rory want to explain his past to Anna? Who is the person from Rory's past?
This short story older man falls for younger woman is a lesson in trusting what is in front of you & learning to communicate with one another. While changed to listen to the whole story Anna is about to find that Rory is the man he says he is. This is a witty & fun story about going all in when it feels right. This book is meant for mature readers.

Older man/younger girl. Anna is a bit shrill.
Sam's a lot of fun, though.
Liked that it wasn't insta-lust but had a bit of a build to it.
