“Close of Play is a wonderful English drama, combining moments that are touching with others that are laugh-out-loud funny.” John Challis, ‘Boycie’ from Only Fools & Horses and The Green Green Grass
“I loved this. As with Outside Edge, it’s not just the cricket, it’s old life itself. Will happily commend Close of Play heartily. Howzat?” -Robert Daws, actor
Brian Clarke has an ordered life, a life of village cricket, solid principles, and careful interaction with those around him. He is resolutely fending off advancing middle-age with a straight bat, determined to defend his wicket against life’s occasional fast balls.
Then he meets Elizabeth – a gentle, caring, genuinely selfless soul who is a glowing bloom amongst the ordered hedgerows of his existence. As Elizabeth demands Brian’s interest…and breathes hope into his heart…he must reassess his self-defined role as the lone batsmen and fight to find the courage to fall in love. Or risk losing her forever.
Close of Play is a thoughtful, funny, beautifully honest story of love and manners. It’s a tale of missed opportunities and a chance at redemption – and the fear of opening our hearts to another when we think we’ve forgotten how to love.

Close of Play A story of love life and romance edition by PJ Whiteley Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
I was immediately drawn in to this charming story about middle-aged love and the game of cricket. I can identify with middle-aged love, but had to do some reading on the game of cricket, which I knew nothing about. I was proud to forge ahead after having done my homework. It gave me a new light into the heart of Brian and his endearing dance with the lovely Elizabeth. I found this story to be light, wonderful, refreshing and beautifully choreographed. I equally found myself entranced by the warmth that P.J. Whitely probably can not help but exude. Beautiful!!
First of all, I'm an American who knows absolutely nothing about Cricket! But I didn't need to understand the game in order to appreciate the tender love story that plays out in this novel. I can't even recall the last time I read a 'romance' as seen through a man's eyes. Here, however, it is a refreshing change of pace and I found myself enjoying this perspective and appreciating the contrast between how men and women view relationships. Brian and Elizabeth are mature characters that come to each other with more than a little bit of life behind them. What proves most appealing is that their doubts, hesitancy, and foibles are very honest and relatable. Whiteley provides a level of depth and sensitivity to Brian and Elizabeth which inspires a reader to care about them and root for them to the end. A delightful read from cover to cover.
A delightfully fresh take on romance, from a man's point of view, this book had me smiling, smirking and sniggering in equal measure.
Brian Clarke, a man of principle that likes his cricket and dislikes change, meets Elizabeth, an unusual woman with an interesting past. And so it begins...
I was really surprised at how much I liked and rooted for Brian, despite having close to nothing in common with him (he'd probably be very disapproving of me), so well-written was the character. And the description of sport-team antics were beautifully perfect. As for the ending, well, you're going to have to read it to find out. Seriously, do.

Some great humor and moments of refreshing charm in this romantic comedy, which is well titled. I especially enjoyed Brian's views on miracles and magic, and I felt a little sorry for Elizabeth during all of his hesitation.
The novel reaches into some serious issues, including slavery and racism, which is a plus, though sometimes Brian's serious/heavy thoughts, particularly about his mortality, became something of a downer. There are several chats and detailed scenes that I suspect one would have to be a fan of cricket to take a real interest in, and I found the characters' strong language jarring at points.
In all, though, the story came together in a believable and ultimately pleasant way, and the ending was satisfying.
