GUNS OF THE WILD WEST

Airship 27 Production saddles up to bring its readers three tales of gun-blazing justice from out of the old Wild West. In the years immediately following the Civil War, the land west of the great Mississippi River was a lawless frontier being shaped by the courageous men and women who ventured there in hopes of finding a better life. What they found was a vast wilderness exploited by outlaws, grifters and cattle barons who made their own law at the end of a gun. Caught in the middle were the brave and noble Native American people, struggling to survive against this tide of so-called civilization.

A rare breed of men took on the challenge of bringing justice the west; men like the mysterious Masked Rider, Virgil Earp and Wild Bill Hickok. These were men who cast their long shadows over western history and went on to become legends. Now writers Eric Jones, Tommy and Aaron Smith bring us their adventures in three fast paced, no-holds barred shoot’em ups wherein it’s good versus evil on the dusty streets and rolling plains of this big country. Load your six shooters, pilgrims and saddle up for western action Airship 27 style.

Masked Rider edition by Eric Jones Tommy Hancock Aaron Smith Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

MASKED RIDER-TALES OF THE WILD WEST is a rousing ride into a wild west that maybe history never saw, but that is alive and well on the page. I'll only offer my review on two of the three tales, seeing as how I wrote the one I'm not reviewing. Eric Jones' "Raid on Granite Gap" was a great Masked Rider tale. Well, having only heard about the Masked Rider, let me rephrase that. This story made me want to read more of the Masked Rider. Eric deftly tells a story of a driven, dedicated man willing to do whatever for the side of right and justice. What he also does, though, is he doesn't shy away from showing this hero as, in some ways, being as dark as the evil he fights. This is definitely no Lone Ranger clone. Even though there are a handful of characters that sort of pop up in this story, Eric weaves them in well and by the end, the fabric of a great tale is complete.
Aaron Smith's "Long Trail of Vengeance" is an entry into the historical fiction arena and as such, made me say, "Wow!" Aaron takes the character of Wild Bill Hickok and does what so few others have done. He gives him his birdlike nose, his protruding upper lip badly hidden under a thick mustache, and his long hair. In other words, Aaron makes Hickok a man, not just a pair of fast hands and guns to match. Humanity is what he brings to this story, not just through Hickok, but through every character. Yes, there is good and there is evil, but to be honest, there's a little bit of both in most of the characters in this. This story builds at a slow burn, but the brand it leaves on you when it's over is one that you'll ponder for a while.
The cover art and interiors on this book set the tone of each story extremely well, as well! The presentation as a whole of THE MASKED RIDER-TALES OF THE WILD WEST was strong, complete with enough adventure and action to choke a horse, and left me hoping there would be much more to follow.
There are three stories in this pulp western collection and all are entertaining reads. I should caution you to make sure you read the product description, though -- despite the fact that Masked Rider is in the title and he's on the cover, he's only in one of the three stories and it's not the longest. The first story is the Masked Rider one and it's a fun little story that showcases the character well. For someone who's fairly new to the character (as I was), it's a nice introduction though it doesn't delve into why the Rider does these things (other than he's a good guy) or why he wears the mask. Perhaps the author assumed that there would be an essay or something in the book that would explain all that -- or that the readers would just come in with the knowledge required. Anyway, I did enjoy it -- it moved quickly and had some nice characterization. The second story features Wyatt Earp's brother in the starring role and it's the longest story and the best in my opinion. Some greater character moments in this one and I could see this one making an entertaining tv show or movie. Wouldn't mind seeing more featuring this character. The third story features Wild Bill Hickock and is another solid, well-told tale. I'm not a massive fan of westerns and when I do delve into that area, it tends to be the Weird West or at least the Masked West... so I was very disappointed to only get one Masked Rider story in this collection. But if you can get past that (as I did), it's a fun collection of tales that I think Western fans will really enjoy.
If you want to read some old time western fun stories, buy this book !!! The characters are familiar and real. The stories are well planned and hold your attention. If you like this genre you can't go wrong!!!
Crude illustrations and sadistic story lines do not make for an interesting read!!! Sorry to say, this book is a piece
